A practical packing list for a klotok tour in Tanjung Puting, from quick-dry clothes to a headlamp and personal medication.

A klotok tour does not require complicated gear, but a few small items will make your trip far more comfortable. Pack everything into one medium soft bag that is easy to carry on and off the boat.

Clothing

  • Light, quick-dry T-shirts and long trousers, ideally in neutral colours.
  • A long-sleeved shirt to protect your skin from the sun and mosquitoes.
  • Sandals for the boat and comfortable closed shoes for the forest trails.
  • A light jacket or jumper for evenings, which can feel cool on the river.
  • No need for swimwear, as swimming in the river is not recommended.

Jungle gear

  • Insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin.
  • A headlamp with spare batteries for night walks.
  • A poncho or light rain jacket.
  • A refillable water bottle. Our boats carry large water jugs to cut plastic waste.
  • Small binoculars for birds and proboscis monkeys.

Electronics and documents

  • A power bank, as electricity on board is limited and usually only runs at night.
  • Dry bags to protect your camera and phone.
  • Your ID or passport, plus a digital copy.
  • Cash for tips and small purchases.

Health

  • Personal medication, oral rehydration salts and stomach remedies.
  • Sunscreen and lip balm.
  • Plasters and antiseptic for small cuts.

What to leave at home

Leave behind jewellery, unnecessary valuables and wheeled suitcases, which are awkward on wooden jetties. Also avoid bringing snacks into the orangutan feeding areas.
