Everything you need to know before visiting Tanjung Puting National Park: how to get there, trip lengths, orangutan feeding times and what to budget.

Tanjung Puting National Park in Central Kalimantan is one of the best places on Earth to see Bornean orangutans in their natural habitat. Its roughly 415,000 hectares of peat-swamp, heath and mangrove forest are threaded by the Sekonyer River. This guide covers everything to prepare before you go.

Why is Tanjung Puting so special?

This is where Dr. Biruté Galdikas founded Camp Leakey in 1971 to study wild orangutans. Besides orangutans you may spot proboscis monkeys, gibbons, hornbills, long-tailed macaques and false gharials. You experience it all from a klotok, a traditional wooden riverboat that doubles as your floating guesthouse.

How to get to Tanjung Puting

The gateway is Iskandar Airport in Pangkalan Bun (PKN). From the airport it is only about 30 minutes by road to Kumai harbour, where your klotok will be waiting. Read our guide on getting to Pangkalan Bun from Jakarta, Surabaya and Bali.

How long should you stay?

  • 3 days, 2 nights: enough to visit all three orangutan feeding stations. Ideal for a first visit.
  • 4 days, 3 nights: adds a morning trek at Camp Leakey and a more relaxed pace.
  • 5 days or more: for keen trekkers and photographers who want to go deeper.

Orangutan feeding times

There are three feeding stations commonly visited by travellers. Times can change, but they are usually:

  • Tanjung Harapan: around 3 PM
  • Pondok Tanggui: around 9 AM
  • Camp Leakey: around 2 PM

Your guide times the cruise so you arrive at each station on schedule.

What does it cost?

Klotok tour prices depend on group size, trip length and the comfort level of the boat. The bigger the group, the lower the price per person. Our Klotok Adventure 3D2N, for example, already includes a private klotok, a guide, all meals and park permits.

Quick tips before you go

  • Book at least two to three months ahead for the busy months of July and August.
  • Carry enough cash, as ATMs are only available in Pangkalan Bun and Kumai.
  • Keep at least five metres from orangutans and never feed wildlife.
