The seasons, hours and orangutan habits to understand so you have the best chance of meeting the red ape at Camp Leakey.
Camp Leakey is the oldest orangutan research station in Tanjung Puting and the highlight of almost every klotok tour. The good news is that orangutans can be seen all year round, but a few factors will improve your chances.
Dry season: May to October
The dry season is the most popular time to visit. Trails are drier, rain is less frequent and there is usually less fruit in the forest. As a result, orangutans visit the feeding stations more often to top up their diet. July and August are the busiest months, so book early.
Wet and fruiting season: November to April
When the forest is fruiting, orangutans rely less on the feeding stations. Fewer may turn up, but the forest is at its greenest, the rivers are full and it is much quieter. For some travellers this is the best time to feel how wild the forest really is.
The best time of day
The Camp Leakey feeding usually takes place around 2 PM. Arrive 30 minutes early to find a good spot. Early mornings before 9 AM are also great for trekking, when wildlife is more active and the air is still cool.
Orangutan-watching etiquette
- Keep at least five metres away and follow your guide.
- Do not bring food or sweet drinks into the feeding area.
- Switch off your camera flash and keep your voice low.
- Skip the visit if you have a cold or cough, as orangutans easily catch human illnesses.
